My Only Memory (in pieces)
(2020)
We hear a voice without seeing who is speaking; sometimes it is female, sometimes male, partly in the singular, partly in the plural; it speaks to us, to itself, challenges itself, responds… The installation, “My Only Memory (in pieces),” by artist and choreographer Juan Dominguez, presented as part of the series “New Empathies,” is an adaptation of the performance, “My Only Memory.” As if blasted into the room, the individual components of the original text become audible at unexpected places within the building as fragments of a textual choreography. The acoustic trail finally leads to a massive sculpture in radialsystem’s Side Hall.
In this performance, the physical-visual does not come to the fore: the voice we listen to becomes the physical body, and the spoken text the movement and action of the piece. The decontextualization and fragmentation of the performance give rise to ephemeral moments of varying duration which render the fleeting nature of change and transformation perceptible.
